Card Value Fundamentals
Baccarat is a simple card game featuring two hands: Player and Banker. The objective is to identify which hand has a value closest to 9. Each round gives two cards to both hands, and after that a third card may be drawn according to the fixed rules that apply.
How are card values calculated? Aces count as one, cards from two to nine count as shown on them, while 10, J, Q and K take the value of 0. If a total exceeds 9, the first digit is ignored. A quick example: 7 + 6 = 13, so the hand is worth 3.
The Third-Card Rules
The third card confuses many beginners, but the rules are fixed, so no decision is needed from you:
- Player: with a total of 0–5, the Player draws a third card; with 6 or 7, the Player stands. A natural 8 or 9 ends the round immediately.
- Banker: with a total of 0–2, the Banker always draws; with 7, the Banker stands. With 3, 4, 5 or 6, the action depends on the Player's third card.
The full third-card table is usually displayed at the table or in the platform's help section, so memorising it is not necessary.
The Three Main Bets
- Banker: pays 1:1 but carries a 5% commission. It has the best winning odds in the long run, which is why many players prefer it.
- Player: pays 1:1 with no commission, but the house edge is slightly higher than Banker.
- Tie: pays 8:1 or 9:1 depending on the table and is rarely placed. It looks attractive, but it is not beneficial in the long run.
Return to Player (RTP)
Over the long run, the Banker bet returns roughly 98.9%, the Player bet roughly 98.8%, and the Tie bet only about 85–86% depending on the table's payout rate. In other words: if you play for a long time, stick to Banker or Player and avoid the Tie bet.
How to Choose a Table
Start at a low-limit table so you feel comfortable with the flow. Check the minimum and maximum limits before sitting down, as well as the number of decks the table uses. Many platforms offer a demo mode — use it to practise risk-free before playing with real money.
Set a budget before the session and never try to chase losses. Remember, baccarat is a game of chance: no pattern or strategy guarantees wins.
